Open Air Remodel
If you can tell from the picture, that’s not the same Lloyd Center Ice Rink many of us grew up with, this version looks way nicer, huh!? That because it was remodeled a few years ago to bring in more natural light, and the open layout of the ice rink skate section is very cool. They added soft rubber floors that you can walk in skates to the ice without falling. It’s pretty cool compared to the stairs we used to navigate into the dungeons of lockers and smelly feet.
Preserving the Iconic Ice Rink
Portland’s oldest mall might undergo a complete transformation sometime in the future. Urban Renaissance Group, in partnership with KKR Real Estate Finance Trust, plans to turn the Lloyd Center into a mixed-use neighborhood. The vision includes housing, shops, entertainment spaces, and preserving the iconic ice rink. Which we think is great news!
Bright Future
According to an OregonLive.com report, they aim to redesign the site with new roads connecting to Portland’s street network and incorporating open outdoor areas reminiscent of the mall’s original design. The majority of the existing mall will eventually be demolished and rebuilt over time, according to Tom Kilbane, Urban Renaissance Group’s Portland market leader.
