Black Friday Sales Fail to Inspire In-Store Shoppers As Online-Delivery Services Seem To Thrive

The hashtag #wherearethepeople is going around TikTok with videos of empty stores on Black Friday 2023.

Did you go shopping yesterday on Black Friday 2023? We did not, and most of the people we know personally skipped Black Friday in-stores, too, in lieu of online shopping delivered to their door. In addition, there are a lot of people that simply can’t afford to shop Black Friday. Then, there’s my camp, which is the “We Know Better” than to shop Black Friday these days because it’s not what it used to be. Fact.

Is Black Friday Dead?

Black Friday used to be cool, now it seems to be considered overrated and overpriced by many, because the real push for your business already happened a few weeks ago at the end of October and early November. History has proven that the best prices are before Thanksgiving, because retailers are fighting to win your holiday budget as soon as possible.

Here is what DealNews.com had to say, “Depending on the categories you’re shopping, though, Black Friday might not be the day with the best deals.”

Honestly, it’s kind of sad to say that Black Friday is not fun anymore, because we used to have a blast getting real amazing deals before the days of on-demand instant gratification/satisfaction, I mean delivery. We also should note that many of the people reading this article may have never seen a real Black Friday sale like one we saw back in the day, if you remember them like I do.

Exclusive Inside Scoop at Fred Meyer

Fred Meyer is a big local retail employer here in the PDX Metro area, and we have 5x friends/family that work there, so I asked one of them about their sales totals today at breakfast. This is what they said, ‘our “Department” only did about $60k to $70k yesterday,’ on Black Friday, ‘compared to over $80k the previous year’ when they managed that department.

What is also interesting is that we heard, from other inside sources, that the Gresham Fred Meyer did closer to $200k and Oregon City did over $200k in the same department. We do not know what the previous years were for these two locations.

Black Friday Predictions

The “predictions” were seemingly good from what we read in this Forbes article before Black Friday, but they may have missed the mark. Only time will tell as more data becomes available.

Here are some stats put together by TIDIO that you may find relevant to the conversation as well.

Stay Tuned

We will update this page with more Black Friday Stats and insider stories as they become available.
