Lloyd Center Ice Rink Continues to Thrive Despite Fewer Mall Shoppers

Millions of people have enjoyed the Lloyd Center Ice Rink since the Lloyd Center Mall first opened August 1st, 1960. In fact, many Oregonians have enjoyed ice skating at Lloyd Center for as long as we can remember, and I am one of those Oregonians.

Continued Revenue

Lloyd Ice is not just a center for the community, it’s also a revenue center for the entire area, and it draws more people than you might think. Yes, some of the shops at Lloyd Center area empty, but the ice rink always has skaters despite fewer mall shoppers over the years. Plus, Lloyd Ice is staffed by awesome local PNWers and many of the local small businesses rely on the traffic the rink brings. No other business in the area has consistently brought in customers for that many years. No one but Lloyd Ice, and they’ve been doing it since the 60s.

1st Mall Ice Skating Rink Ever

Lloyd Center Ice Rink is the world’s first shopping center ice rink, and the open-air indoor skating concept combined with shopping proved to be a crowd pleaser for many. My family and I have made a lot of fun memories at love Lloyd Ice, and I’m glad to hear “they” plan on keeping it open during the changes to come.

Preserving the Iconic Ice Rink

There are plan to transform the area sometime in the future. Urban Renaissance Group, in partnership with KKR Real Estate Finance Trust, plans to turn Lloyd Center into a mixed-use neighborhood. The vision includes housing, shops, entertainment spaces, and preserving the iconic ice rink. Which we think is great news for everyone!

Bright Future

According to an OregonLive.com report, they plan on redesigning the site with new roads connecting to Portland’s street car network and incorporating open outdoor areas reminiscent of the mall’s original design. The majority of the existing mall will eventually be demolished and rebuilt over time, according to Tom Kilbane, Urban Renaissance Group’s Portland market leader.

Lloyd Ice provides Ice Skating Lessons throughout the year with renowned instructors that are sure to impress. Plus, the remodeled indoor facilities are great for moms and dads who want to take a few laps around the rink/mall while their children learn how to ice skate.
